Digital Excellence Award

Insel Gruppe, BernĀ

Short description

Medicine is currently undergoing fundamental change: personalised healthcare, prediction and prevention are becoming increasingly important, and society is living more individually and longer. At the same time, digitalisation is lagging behind this development, with many processes still only minimally digitalised – leaving potential for efficiency and savings untapped.
With KISS by Epic, the Insel Group is implementing one of the most comprehensive digital transformations in the Swiss healthcare system. The integrated clinic information and management system (KISS) connects treatment teams, processes and patients, improving care in the long term.
Epic has replaced over 50 individual systems and initiated a cultural change. Since March 2024, we have been experiencing a fundamentally expanded interprofessional collaboration. As part of this paradigm shift, role models in the hospital have been redefined, workflows structured and quality assurance optimised.
The project successfully transitioned from the project phase to the operational phase in 2025. The success of our Epic implementation is essentially based on four pillars: strong commitment, transparent governance, value-based communication and sustainable change management.
Epic is more than an IT system – it is the driving force behind a new digital healthcare culture that fully exploits the potential of digitalisation and offers huge opportunities for the whole of Switzerland.

Jury Statement

The jury highlights the impressive digital transformation in the hospital environment, which was achieved through the introduction of an integrated system with a market-leading HIS (hospital information system).
The replacement of over 50 individual systems with an integrated platform has led to significant gains in efficiency and quality. The integrated integration of processes, people and machines is particularly positive.
The data-based control, the integration of research-intensive activities, international benchmarking and the scaling potential were also highlighted.
